Embracing New Beginnings Under New Management

At Honu Bakery, we're excited to share the story of our journey and introduce you to our new management team. It all began with the Yang family, who first launched the store in 2004 as Boulangerie Bakery in a small shop on South King Street. Their dedication and hard work paid off, and in 2014, they opened their second location at the Kamehameha Shopping Center in Kalihi.


Over the years, the Yangs perfected their daily breads, optimizing favorites like our signature Turtle Bread and constantly innovating to bring new items to their loyal customers. Recognizing a gap in the local market for quality cakes, they gradually expanded their whole cake menu, providing locals with a place to find the perfect cake for any special occasion.


Fast forward to 2023, the Yang family decided to move to the mainland to embark on a new chapter. After interviewing numerous interested entrepreneurs on the island, they chose to transition their beloved bakery to the Park family, who bring over a decade of local business experience to the table. The transition was completed in January 2024, and the new management team includes a young manager with over 10 years of experience consulting with Fortune 500 companies.


This decision was driven by the need to enhance various aspects of the bakery. While Honu Bakery already had a strong product line that locals loved, it lacked robust marketing, modern technology, internal systems, and community involvement. Since taking over, the new management team has swiftly implemented several key improvements:


  • Community Engagement: Partnering with local businesses and media, such as HI Daily Now, to deepen our involvement in the local community.

  • Enhanced Employee Experience: Introducing a new HR system to provide better support and a positive work environment for our employees.

  • Advanced POS System: Implementing a new Point of Sales system to gain better insights into customer preferences and improve our offerings.

  • Leadership Development: Establishing a new employee structure with experienced staff stepping up as shift leaders to mentor new employees.

  • Quality Investment: Investing in better bakery equipment to produce higher quality breads and coffees.


These initiatives are already making a positive impact on the business, but we have even more exciting plans for the next 10 years. We aim to open our third location, revamp our cake lineup, start selling merchandise for our fans, regularly donate our breads to communities in need, and much more. We hope you're as excited as we are to continue promoting local business and serving our wonderful community.
